Guild Day and AGM 19 May 2007 The Guild’s 9th Annual General Meeting was held in the Community Centre, Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire. The programme this year incorporated two speakers, Terry Viner on knitting machine maintenance, and Elaine Cater on different edgings. The competition garments were displayed, and clubs, tradespeople and individuals had stands around the main hall.
The local Halifax Machine Knitting group hosted the event, and did much of the planning and preparation for the day. Their members turned out in force to set up at the venue the night before, which was very much appreciated by the Guild committee. The group also displayed many lovely items of work - from lacy jackets and skirts to Hedley Metcalfe’s toys and fun items. They also had an impressive display of beautiful cushions produced for a recent class project under the guidance of June Walker - and you could buy one for £5!
Also on display were the entries in the Guild’s annual knitting competition, which ranged from the winning mohair throw to a knitted computer with various lovely garments in between. Each entry in the competition had a small card attached giving comments by the judges on different points of particular interest. (See separate report and pictures.)
A short AGM took place first, followed by the announcement of the winning entries in the knitting competition. Cups and certificates were presented to those winners who were in attendance, sadly, not many had made it to Yorkshire. Elaine Cater received the Sherborne Vase on behalf of the winning club, Middlesex Machine Knitters. The group runner-up certificate was accepted by Hedley Metcalfe on behalf of the Halifax club. Elaine Cater was also presented with the Silver Reed Cup - first prize in the 100gram/cone ends category.
A new event was introduced this year - everyone attending the AGM was encouraged to vote for their own favourite garment from among the competition entries. Later, the winner was announced as Beryl Harley’s lovely blue ribbed top enhanced with bugle beads - a worthy winner.
During the break members chatted over cups of tea and coffee or a bacon roll (provided by the excellent caterers) before the first of two main talks took place, in which Terry Viner entertained and explained to everyone the workings of a Brother knitting machine. With screwdriver in hand he deftly prized the cover off and revealed the hidden parts where fluff and dirt collect. DIY cleaning and maintenance are a ‘must’ in these days when commercial people are in short supply.
Lunch was very efficiently served, after which Elaine Cater gave a very interesting demonstration on edgings. With Liz Holness demonstrating on the second machine, and samples to pass round, everyone was able to see how the trimmings were made.
The grand finale fashion show involved anyone and everyone who was wearing a machine knitted item. Some of the models were caught on camera.
